When Was Snus Invented: The History Of Snus And Nicotine Pouches

Snus is more than just another tobacco product, as it holds a special place in the culture and history of Sweden, with early versions of powdered tobacco itself dating back as far as the 16th century! Although following the French Revolution, snuff began to fall out of favour, so the Swedes began developing new ways to enjoy it. Instead of drawing snuff up the nose, Swedish snus users had begun to moisten the finely milled powder, mixing it with salt, water and sometimes herbs, turning it into a substance you could place under the upper lip rather than inhale. This became a common practice during the 1800s and snus began to be manufactured in different varieties by different suppliers as its popularity only continued to grow.

By the start of the 19th century, snus was entering a golden era in Sweden as the moist form of smokeless tobacco, or loose snus became the most effective and premium version of the product. Unlike dry, nasal snuff, loose snus delivered nicotine through the oral membranes, providing a longer-lasting and subtler effect.
